The price is right on the Hyperflex Amp 4/3 this winter- Jon Coen

Story from ESPN.com

It’s been pretty widely accepted, for a long time that while neoprene is still the basic elements of a wetsuit, it’s not the best insulator. In recent years, wetsuit designers have found ways to include wool, titanium, fleece, and other heat-keepers into the neoprene. It’s been effective, but weight is always a factor. There’s nothing lighter than air.

Now around for eight years, Hyperflex is still a relatively new player in the wetsuit world. And it’s a tough market to crack. Especially when you’re dealing with freezing water, who wants to gamble on a new name? But this outfit is based in New Jersey, where they know a thing or two about what Geore Constanza referred to as, “shrinkage.”

WHAT IT IS: The new AMP Series features Aerodome panels in the front and back around your core. Aerodome? Sounds like some new sports stadium built next to LAX, but it’s actually a limestone-based Yamamoto design that uses little pockets of air to keep body warmth in. All seems are glued, blind-stitched and liquid taped. It also has those nifty drain-holes at the bottom of the zipper that allow excess water out after you get pummeled, but doesn’t allow it to flow in.

WHY IT RULES: These days, a good 3/2 will get you down to the 50-degree mark, so a 4/3 should arm you against the chill of early winter in most of the country. It simply comes down to dollars and sense (common sense, doggy.) This suit is anywhere from a hundo to $150 cheaper than other companies’ top-of-the-line suits.

Some surfers are skeptical of the quality of a suit at this price. The Hyperflex staff has done its homework to work out the old seem splits, including an extra spot-tape on all interior stress-points.

“The suits have come a long way and they are really doing a great job with the design. The quality is right there with the big boys and the price is cheaper,” says team rider and New Jersey native, Dean Randazzo, “Quality is most noticeable in winter suits. Surfing in those temps is serious and you need the warmest gear.”

Jon Coen- ESPN

The AMP Series- High End Materials, Mid-range Price

The AMP front zip series returns for the fourth year, totally redesigned from the ground up, with research & development input from cold water charger and former WCT Surfer Dean Randazzo. A new pattern profile, all new AMPstretch superstretch materials and the addition of exterior liquid seam taping and Yamamoto Aerodome® panels highlight the new 2010 AMP.

New for 2010, the AMP “core” chest and back panels now feature limestone based Yamamoto Aerodome® air insulated neoprene technology. The middle layer of the wetsuit incorporates small perforated chambers which trap air. These chambers work by insulating the body with air pockets, the same way double insulated windows trap a layer of air between the glass.

To further insulate core temperature, we have combined Aerodome® Technology with our chillbreaker mesh skin on the external layer and our Xtend Thermal fabric on the internal layer. Aerodome® is available on AMP all series fullsuits.
